GeoConnect is a youth-driven geospatial organisation committed to strengthening geospatial skills, open data use, and innovation for sustainable development in Zimbabwe and across Africa. As part of its communications strategy, GeoConnect publishes The Spatial Times, a quarterly newsletter that curates geospatial news, contributor stories, community insights, and emerging trends within the geospatial ecosystem.
To support the growth and sustainability of this flagship publication, GeoConnect seeks motivated and creative youth volunteers to join its Marketing and Communications Unit.
The Communications and Marketing Intern will support the planning, production, and dissemination of The Spatial Times Newsletter, while contributing to broader storytelling, branding, and digital engagement initiatives of GeoConnect. This role is ideal for a self-starter, creative thinker, and aspiring communications professional seeking to build experience, visibility, and a strong professional portfolio.
Under the guidance of the GeoConnect Communications Lead, the intern will:
Support the planning, coordination, and production of the quarterly Spatial Times Newsletter
Assist in curating stories, news, and contributor content from the geospatial community
Write and edit short articles, editorials, and feature stories aligned with GeoConnect’s mission
Design basic visual content (newsletter banners, graphics, and social media assets) using Canva
Support content scheduling and promotion across GeoConnect’s digital platforms
Assist with contributor coordination and basic editorial workflows
Contribute innovative ideas to improve audience engagement, reach, and storytelling
Work independently while meeting agreed timelines and quality standards
Education
No formal degree requirement
Students or recent graduates in communications, media, journalism, marketing, GIS, development studies, or related fields are encouraged to apply
Experience
No prior professional experience required
Skills and Competencies
Strong written communication and storytelling skills
Basic ability to design graphics using Canva
Interest in communications, media, digital storytelling, or branding
Creativity, initiative, and willingness to learn
Ability to work with minimal supervision in a remote environment
Strong time management and reliability
Interest in geospatial issues, technology, or development is an added advantage
This volunteer assignment offers:
